Unusually, this sits outside the general block on business entertainment described under 7403 (U.K. Entertainment) — HMRC specifically excludes reasonable hospitality provided to an overseas customer in the course of business negotiations, so the VAT can be reclaimed in the normal way. A £360 bill (£300 net, £60 VAT) is a debit of £300 to 7404 (Overseas Entertainment), a debit of £60 to 2201 (Purchase Tax Control Account), and a credit of £360 to 2100 (Creditors Control Account).

Entertaining a client while abroad

The same exporter also entertains a client while visiting them overseas. Any VAT charged there is foreign VAT, not UK VAT, so it can't be reclaimed through the UK VAT return at all — the whole invoice, converted to sterling, is simply a cost. A £310 bill is a debit of £310 to 7404 and a credit of £310 to 2100, with nothing posted to 2201 because there's no UK VAT involved in the first place.
