U.K. Entertainment
OverheadsThis Overheads code records the cost of u.k. entertainment incurred in running the business. As an expense account, it normally carries a debit balance: debit entries increase the balance (recording new costs) and credit entries decrease it (for example, correcting an error or a refund received).
Real-world examples
Client-facing sales agency
A sales-driven agency takes a prospective client out for dinner to help win new business. Input VAT on entertaining anyone who isn't an employee — customers, prospects, suppliers — is specifically blocked under UK VAT rules, however good the VAT invoice from the restaurant looks. A £600 bill is posted in full: a debit of £600 to 7403 (U.K. Entertainment) and a credit of £600 to 2100 (Creditors Control Account), with nothing split out to 2201 (Purchase Tax Control Account) because none of the VAT can be reclaimed.
Staff social event
The same business also puts on a staff lunch to mark a project finishing. Because this is staff entertainment rather than client entertaining, the VAT block doesn't apply and input VAT is recoverable in the normal way — a £240 bill (£200 net, £40 VAT) is a debit of £200 to 7403, a debit of £40 to 2201, and a credit of £240 to 2100. Whether an entertainment cost sits with or without a VAT split often comes down entirely to who was actually round the table.
Commonly confused with
Because code 7402 (Hotels) sits right next to this one in Overheads, it's a common mis-posting target. Code 7403 is specifically for u.k. entertainment, while 7402 covers hotels — similar in nature, but keeping them separate is what makes the overheads section of your management accounts meaningful rather than a single lumped total.
What a mis-posting here costs you
An error posting to U.K. Entertainment won't change total overhead spend, but it will distort the overheads breakdown that's usually reviewed line by line each month to spot cost creep.
