H.P. Interest
OverheadsThis Overheads code records the cost of h.p. interest incurred in running the business. As an expense account, it normally carries a debit balance: debit entries increase the balance (recording new costs) and credit entries decrease it (for example, correcting an error or a refund received).
Real-world examples
Haulage and logistics
A haulage firm buys a fleet of vehicles on hire purchase rather than outright, spreading payment over each vehicle's working life. Each agreement generates its own repayment and interest schedule, so running several vehicles on HP at once means several separate schedules to track. A month's interest across the fleet of £480 is a debit of £480 to 7904 (H.P. Interest) and a credit of £480 to the HP creditor account, with no VAT line — the interest element of an HP agreement is exempt from VAT.
Manufacturing — a single major asset
A manufacturer buys a new CNC machine on hire purchase instead of leasing it, because HP leads to eventual ownership: the asset is capitalised on the balance sheet and depreciated from day one, unlike an operating lease (7702/7703) where the equipment usually stays off the balance sheet. VAT on the machine itself was due in full at the start of the agreement, treated as if the goods had been supplied outright — only the ongoing interest charged over the term lands here. A month's interest of £310 is a debit of £310 to 7904 and a credit of £310 to the HP creditor account, again with no VAT line.
Commonly confused with
Because code 7903 (Loan Interest Paid) sits right next to this one in Overheads, it's a common mis-posting target. Code 7904 is specifically for h.p. interest, while 7903 covers loan interest paid — similar in nature, but keeping them separate is what makes the overheads section of your management accounts meaningful rather than a single lumped total.
What a mis-posting here costs you
An error posting to H.P. Interest won't change total overhead spend, but it will distort the overheads breakdown that's usually reviewed line by line each month to spot cost creep.
