Insurance Claims
SalesThis Sales code records income the business earns from insurance claims. As an income account, it normally carries a credit balance: credit entries increase the balance (recording new income) and debit entries decrease it (for example, a credit note issued to a customer).
Real-world examples
Retail or hospitality (stock or property damage claim)
A shop suffers a burst pipe that ruins stock, and the insurer pays out for the damaged goods and the cost of repairs. A £6,000 claim settlement is a debit of £6,000 to 1200 (Bank) and a credit of £6,000 to 4903 (Insurance Claims) — insurance payouts are outside the scope of VAT, since no supply has taken place, so nothing is posted to 2200 (Sales Tax Control Account) even though the shop's ordinary sales would carry VAT.
Any business (business interruption cover)
A business interruption policy pays out to cover lost profit while trading was disrupted — after a fire, say, or a period the premises were unusable. Because it's compensating for lost profit rather than a specific asset, insurers calculate the payout against the expected turnover shortfall, and it's recorded the same way regardless of industry: a debit to 1200 (Bank) and a credit to 4903, with no VAT, whether it's a restaurant recovering lost covers or an office-based business recovering lost billable time.
Commonly confused with
Because code 4902 (Commissions Received) sits right next to this one in Sales, it's a common mis-posting target. Code 4903 is specifically for insurance claims, while 4902 covers commissions received — similar in nature, but keeping them separate is what makes the sales section of your management accounts meaningful rather than a single lumped total.
What a mis-posting here costs you
A sale posted to the wrong Sales code won't change total turnover, but it will distort the sales analysis used to see which products, services or channels are actually driving revenue.
